“Surface Changes” is the latest video to emerge from Kaki King’s groundbreaking new work,The Neck is a Bridge to the Body, produced in collaboration with Dawn of Man Productions. This visually striking video, which premiered on WNYC’s “Soundcheck”, perfectly captures King’s dynamic live show.
Using the body of the guitar as an alternative projection screen, image and sound converge to enhance one another and offer the audience a renewed musical experience. King’s emotive composition is highlighted using images that allow listeners to be moved by and with the music. The end result is an incredibly imaginative, provocative, and beautiful presentation by Kaki King.
The renowned guitarist and composer brings the same commanding inspiration to her live show of ‘The Neck is a Bridge to the Body’. The artist hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself” will be performing at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on May 21 and be sure to check out King’s new video for ‘The Surface Changes’.
Kaki King’s guitar struggles to fit in while traversing the streets of Brooklyn’s hipster capital, Bushwick, in the new video for “Roaming Guitar”, premiering on Flavorwire this week.
While the tongue-in-cheek clip sets out to mock elitist snobbery within the music industry, its narrative also resonates as an honest, at times poignant, metaphor for King’s own adolescence and finding her voice as a young guitar player. The video, filmed in stop-motion and supported by pieces of dialogue between King’s signature Ovation Adamasand snobbier “cool guy” guitars, is a journey of self-discovery.
“I never really cared about fitting in,” King said while talking to Flavorwire, “but I was always curious as to why people chose the music that they did. How did someone decide to dedicate themselves to rock and metal for instance? I never could choose a set path or any kind of music connected to a type of attitude or fashion or lifestyle.”
Kaki’s new project, The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body, also got a dance floor spin this week with a mammoth remix for “Ooblek” by iconic tastemaker JD Samson. Showcasing the wide range of styles that King’s vision can easily fit, Samson recasts King's wistful original as an infectious, uplifting disco jam.

Provocative and moving, surprising and beautiful, The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body is Kaki King at her visionary best: deconstructing and redefining the role of solo instrumental artist though virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. The album is a companion piece to Kaki's groundbreaking new multi-media performance, which uses projection mapping to present the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other.

"Although it’s a soundtrack to the multimedia show, I want the album to stand on it's own as a collection of instrumental music," says Kaki, who brought NYC-based string quartet, ETHEL, to join her on two tracks, along with Dan Brantigan on horns. "The album is an amalgam of the many different ways I’ve approached the instrument over the years. Some of it's rough, some of it's sad and beautiful, and some of it could be remixed for the dance floor. More than anything the process of creating this music has proven to me once again that the guitar really does the speaking, and I'm just the interpreter."

"A shockingly gifted, stunningly complex performer... King has been dubbed by fans and critics alike: an iconoclast, a prodigy and a guitar hero, even drawing critical comparisons to Jimi Hendrix." - LA Times

Kaki King is proud to present her first music video from her groundbreaking multimedia project The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body. The video, for the song “Anthropomorph”, features a stunning collaboration with visual artist Shantell Martin, whose own work has captivated fans and the media over the past few years.
Provocative and moving, surprising and beautiful, The Neck Is A Bridge To The Bodymarks the first time that King, a gifted composer and guitarist, has collaborated with visual artists. Using projection mapping to transform her guitar into a veritable movie screen, King’s insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity reimagines the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other. The result is convergence of sound and light, frequency and color that allows each to shape the other.
“Music really helps give my lines and words life, and brings a natural spring to them,” notes Martin. “Listening and creating live to Kaki's piece was almost like meditating: becoming lost in the song; so full and present.”
King’s music was likewise influenced by Martin’s creation. “Shantell improvised to a solo guitar demo of the song,” she notes. “But when I saw what she had created, I heard percussion, horns, finger snapping, and organs. So I added those instruments to the final audio track. It was a beautiful back and forth.”
The Neck is a Bridge to the Body uses an Ovation Adamas 1581-KK Kaki King Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar customized specifically for this production. The show was produced in collaboration with Glowing Pictures – known for their work with such artists as Animal Collective, David Byrne & Brian Eno, Beastie Boys, and TV On The Radio.
