Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” composer and guitarist Kaki King is a true iconoclast. Over the past 10 years the Brooklyn-based artist has released six extraordinarily diverse and distinctive albums (from which B-sides & Rarities has been largely culled), performed with such icons as Foo Fighters, Timbaland, and ...
Kaki King is proud to present her first music video from her groundbreaking multimedia project The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body. The video, for the song “Anthropomorph”, features a stunning collaboration with visual artist Shantell Martin, whose own work has captivated fans and the media over the past few years.
Provocative and moving, surprising and beautiful, The Neck Is A Bridge To The Bodymarks the first time that King, a gifted composer and guitarist, has collaborated with visual artists. Using projection mapping to transform her guitar into a veritable movie screen, King’s insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity reimagines the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other. The result is convergence of sound and light, frequency and color that allows each to shape the other.
“Music really helps give my lines and words life, and brings a natural spring to them,” notes Martin. “Listening and creating live to Kaki's piece was almost like meditating: becoming lost in the song; so full and present.”
King’s music was likewise influenced by Martin’s creation. “Shantell improvised to a solo guitar demo of the song,” she notes. “But when I saw what she had created, I heard percussion, horns, finger snapping, and organs. So I added those instruments to the final audio track. It was a beautiful back and forth.”
The Neck is a Bridge to the Body uses an Ovation Adamas 1581-KK Kaki King Signature 6-String Acoustic guitar customized specifically for this production. The show was produced in collaboration with Glowing Pictures – known for their work with such artists as Animal Collective, David Byrne & Brian Eno, Beastie Boys, and TV On The Radio.
